PIT STOP DATA

The Most Uncaffeinated Drive in America

By Jake Boyles · August 25, 2026 · From the Pit Stop database of 700,000+ places at all 19,675 US interstate exits

There are drives where the coffee finds you, and there are drives where you'd better have brought it. We measured the difference, exit by exit, for every interstate in the country.

The longest coffee-free stretch of interstate in America is 137 miles of I-40 across the Mojave Desert.

From the Needles area to Barstow, California, no exit offers coffee of any kind. At 70 mph that is two full hours of desert with whatever's left in your cup going cold.

The uncaffeinated hall of fame

StretchRoughlyMiles without coffee
I-40, CaliforniaNeedles to Barstow137
I-65, Alabamasouth of Montgomery toward Evergreen107
I-69, Indianathe southern leg105
I-16, GeorgiaDublin to the Savannah approach104

The Mojave record is at least honest: nobody lives there. The surprise is the Southeast, where I-65 and I-16 run empty for a hundred miles through entirely inhabited country. The coffee chains simply haven't taken the exits.

The white space, quantified

This is the part where site-selection people lean in. Our database can list every high-traffic exit — gas stations, fast food, and hotels already present, traffic proven — that has no drive-thru coffee at all, corridor by corridor, for the whole country. The regional coffee chains sprinting east and the national ones filling gaps are, in effect, racing to color in this exact map. (If that's your job, the first cut is free: jake@pit-stop-app.com.)

And for completeness, from our food desert study: 2,440 interstate exits have no food or drink of any kind. The coffee map has holes. That map has craters.

Methodology. Coffee presence means an exit with a coffee shop, cafe, or major coffee brand within roughly one mile of the ramp, from our map of all 19,675 exits. Gaps are measured between consecutive coffee exits on the same corridor; partial or discontinuous highway designations are excluded. Underlying place data © OpenStreetMap contributors (ODbL).
