The Star Divided: Hardee’s, Carl’s Jr., and the Chain That Never Meets Itself

By Jake Boyles · August 26, 2026 · From the Pit Stop database of 700,000+ places at all 19,675 US interstate exits

Since 1997, Hardee's and Carl's Jr. have been one company. Same parent, same star logo, nearly the same menu. The Famous Star and the Original Thickburger are corporate cousins wearing different name tags, split along a line drawn by a merger a generation ago.

We mapped both chains across every interstate exit in America to find where the two halves of the star meet. The answer is that they don't. Ever.

Map of Hardee's and Carl's Jr. exits across the US, showing zero overlap
Hardee's: 789 interstate exits. Carl's Jr.: 484. Exits with both: zero.

Sheetz and Wawa, actual rivals, share 21 exits. McDonald's and Burger King share 2,041. The one pair with every corporate reason to coexist shares none.

The seam of the star

This isn't two chains that stay in separate corners. Their territories overlap by more than a thousand miles of longitude: Hardee's reaches west all the way to I-90 Exit 96 in Missoula, Montana, and Carl's Jr. reaches east to I-220 in Shreveport, Louisiana. Louisiana, Oklahoma, and Wyoming each have both brands inside their borders. Still zero shared exits.

The closest the two halves ever come is on one road: I-44 through the Ozarks. A Hardee's sits at Exit 4 in Joplin, Missouri; a Carl's Jr. sits at Exit 283 near Vinita, Oklahoma. Forty-eight miles apart, same highway, same star, never touching. If you want to eat at both halves of one company on one tank of gas, that's the only place in America to do it.

The two capitals

Each half has a heartland: North Carolina is Hardee's country (98 exits), with Virginia right behind at 95. Carl's Jr.'s capital is California with 270 exits, more than half its entire interstate footprint. In between lies a genuine no-man's-land through Kansas, Nebraska, and the Dakotas where the star simply disappears from the map.

The partition made sense in 1997 and it has been maintained with remarkable discipline ever since. Most brand borders on the interstate are accidents of franchising economics. This one is policy, drawn on the map so cleanly you can see the merger from space.
